Simple Search, Version 1.0

About this script

This is a small and quick search script, that crawls on-line through your web site.

It looks for the text entered in the text box and displays in the result page all the pages that matche the search criteria numbered from 1.

Below each page found there is a preview of up to 2 lines of the found text. Also, searches are not case sensitive and HTML tags are ignored.

The result page also displays the search box with the searched text displayed as entered in the search form.

Both the search form and the result page are very light and both can be easily integrated into your web site's look and feel.

Installing the script

1. Download the zipped file. It should contain 3 files: simple_search.pl, index.txt, result_page.htm, search_form.htm.

2. Configure the index.txt file as described below.

3. Upload all files to your cgi-bin directory (or wherever you run your perl scripts for).

4. Thats it!

Configuration

1. Configure the first line in the Perl script to suit the path to Perl on your server.

2. Configure the index.txt text file as follows:

The index.txt is built from records. Each record starts in a new line.
Each record is built from 2 fileds seperated by a pipe ( | ).
The first part is the URL to the page you wish to be crawled whenever a search is performed. The scond part is the logical name of the page you wish to appear in the results page.
This is a sample of typical lines in your index.txt:

../producs_eng_08.html|Red Products Page

../games/space/new_games_index.htm|Check Our New Games

You can check this script by using the serach box at the top of the page.

The index.txt file contains only few pages, so try text like "table" or "052" or any word on this page.
